I was born in Scotland, and live in South Africa, with my husband and three adult sons. I have an MA in Medieval Studies from Edinburgh University, and a PhD in linguistics from the University of Cape Town. I also went to America on a Fulbright Scholarship .

I've done various jobs - first, in the Manuscripts Department, Edinburgh University Library; then Assistant Editor, Dictionary of the Scottish Language 11th to 17th century; then for 20 years I was lecturer and Senior Lecturer at Vista University, Port Elizabeth and NMMU Port Elizabeth, where, with a colleague, I made the computer program English for Everyone (www.e4e.co.za) - online language support for tertiary students, first published by Pearson Higher Education. I've also published academic articles.

I illustrate books for South African educational publishers. My own illustrated children's books - self-published by Greenorebooks - are 'Granny Goes Gallivanting' (with Martheanne Finnemore) and 'The Queen of the Birds: An African Calendar'. There are several more in the pipeline.
